How Color Spectrum Affects Plant Growth

Growers nowadays have a different idea of what types of light they need for their plants in the growth process. However, we thought it would be a great idea to look closer at this topic. The sun itself does not discriminate between the various types of lights, it simply just emits light, and how plants on earth and other living things process that light depends entirely on them.

It actually turns out plants are particular in the light portions they use from the sun, especially during the process of photosynthesis, and that’s what we want to look at here.

The Light Spectrum

At the lower end of the visible light spectrum, the lights in the shades of blue, moving towards longer wavelengths you get to the red end of the spectrum. People working with indoor plant operations are often more familiar with red and blue lights, but it is a good idea that you understand how the complete color spectrum affects the growth of plants. Moving from the blue end towards the red end of the spectrum, we would get a better idea of how lights play a role in plant growth.

Blue Light

At the beginning part of a plant’s growth cycle, blue light is essential. This is because plants absorb this type of light, which triggers the production of chlorophyll. During the seeding process, your plants need blue light and through the first cycle of their growth to ensure strong stems, healthy roots, and healthy leaves. Plants without this light will never grow out of the ground, so any of the lighting systems you choose needs to include a healthy dose of exposure to this light shade.

Purple Light

Moving up the spectrum, we have the purple light, and while this may not be as familiar to most of us, it certainly helps your plants to grow. Compared to red light, purple has a much stronger wavelength and it could be as effective in helping your plants grow through the vegetative process like blue light. It is a very energetic light and plants can use that energy, although it may not be effective by itself.

Red Light

Compared to blue, red light has a longer wavelength and hence, a lot less energetic. When using LED grow lights, it is important that your plants receive enough exposure to red light during the vegetative stage and flowering or blooming stages. Red light, far red and the wavelengths around it are essential during the entire grow. It is advisable that you use increase red light later towards the end of your plant’s growth cycle in combination with blue light.

A Full Spectrum of Light

Of course, for the healthiest plants, you have to include light from across the color spectrum.
